futile是什么意思（英语高级词汇：futile）

成 语"竹篮打水一场空"比喻白费力气，没有效果，徒劳无功。

英文表达这层意思的有很多单词，比如 vain, useless, pointless, unsuccessful 或 fruitless 等。

不过，我觉得最符合中文字面和寓意的还是今天要说的这个 futile /'fju:tl/。

futile 源自拉丁语，最初意思是 leaky (渗漏的)，现在 fut 这个词根与 fus / fund / found 一样，都表示"流动"。

这不就有了"竹篮打水"的画面感了？
